The firm, established in 1956, was started as a partnership by Merlin Graham “Chunky” Duff, a yacht surveyor and naval architect, and Ivan Graham, a Royal Navy Engineer Officer. Originally providing yacht surveys, compass adjustment and advising on the prevention of decay in wooden boats and vessels, the firm began researching into how metal hulled boats and ships could be better protected from corrosion using sacrificial anodes.
MGDUFF went on to lead the way in the dark art of Cathodic Protection which has been the preferred method of corrosion control in the marine and offshore industry since the late 1950s. Today, MGDUFF is the brand leader for sacrificial anodes and is factory fit for Princess Yachts, Sunseeker and Fairline boats. They have been manufacturing zinc and aluminium anodes at their foundry in Chichester since 2008 and their diverse customer base spans all types of marine operations from tankers and container ships to tug boats, ferries, Naval craft, mega yachts and marinas. The company was also instrumental in the development of Chichester Marina back in 1965, after much local opposition. This was the first purpose built lock in and out yacht basin in the country and the marina is now a flourishing and well-loved feature of Chichester Harbour.
Nowadays, MGDUFF has diversified in the other areas of surface protection and supplies and installs high specification hygienic surface finishes into a wide variety of situations including commercial kitchens, hospital operating theatres and ward areas and other clean room areas.
The firm is very much a family affair and the Seabrook family have owned and run the company since 1965. Andrew Seabrook, the current managing Director, took over in 1992, after working his way up through the ranks for his father, Tony Seabrook. Andrew’s brother, Gavin, joined the company as a Director in 1999. The company employs 25 local people, a number of whom have worked for the company for many years.
The name MGDUFF is synonymous with quality, trust and longevity. This is very much at the heart of what MGDUFF is about and has kept the company going for 60 years and seems on course to do so for a long time yet!
